A video produced, by Household Hacker, that depicts an iPod being charged by a Gatorade powered onion has been circulating the internet recently, making Gizmodo, Digg, The Gadgets Weblog and TUAW. The video looked pretty neat and I had to test it out for myself.
I was pretty skeptical, as electrolytes in solution just conduct electricity, they won’t produce it and the anode and cathode would have to be two different metals. I hoped that the onion would add something to the mix so that it would work. I followed their instructions exactly, but sadly could not get either my nano or 4G iPod to charge.
I am pretty sure that there are two different cords in the Household Hacker video. One is coming from the onion and the other from a power source, through that suspicious notebook that the iPod is sitting on.
It seemed a little possible, until he simply plugged the USB into the onion. I would’ve believed it if he had used the wires properly connected to the anode and cathode, which were also not present.
Yes Adam, you are right. I shouldn’t have been so gullible.
I am going to connect a multimeter to an anode and cathode of different metals and see if this actually produces any current.

It really doesn’t work? This seemed like such a cert, like the whole Iraq weapons-of-mass-destruction thing.
IT worked for me both ways mine and his.
Actually i tried this experament at my house and then agin at my school im a 17 year old this actually works. but there is one thing i think he left out to tell you the ipod has to be 100% dead and i also use the new g2 gatorade it has the most electrlyes in it. after letting the onion absorb all the electrlyes it could. i wraped it in aluminum foil then put it inside the freazer i left the onion in over night so it was in there for about 10 hours . when i took it out it was frozed on the inside but the out side wasnt all that bad it was ripe just like the video after i wiped the extra frost off the onion put it on the shot glass pluged it in then it took about 30 secounds for the ipod to turn its self on and begein chargeing.
The source of energy from the onion and gatorade is a type of biomass. a type of energy for those who dont understand. there is more then one way for this to work. i did it my way after trying his was and it worked out great. the only reason why i froze the onion was so i didnt have to let it soak then sit out all day . i used the onion that moring in my icp class that was about 5 days ago. you can do your own way and it might work if not try agin another way dont be such a d**k srry for the last word there only thing i could think of while typeing.
