Religulous Roundup

Last week, a lot of new information was revealed about Bill Maher’s upcoming movie, Religulous. I have been tracking the term religulous with google alerts and my inbox has exploded with stories. I started tracking the term about a month ago and had received about 5 alerts about it in the first 3 weeks. Over this past week, I have received over 50 alerts.

Here is a roundup of the writing from around the blogosphere that I found to be the most interesting.

Religulous was originally planned to be released around easter, but easter came and went and the movie didn’t get released. At the time, I was left wondering why Maher’s camp was quiet about the film not getting released. It was not until I read Phil Brown’s article that I realized this was due to the writer’s strike, which I had completely forgotten about. I guess this is because I don’t watch enough TV.

Slashfilm was one of the first blogs to notice and post the new trailer, which is where I found out about it in the first place. They had good statements from both Larry Charles and Bill Maher:

Set to the rhythms of Sympathy for the Devil and Jesus Walks, from the Western Wall to the Vatican, from self-professed messiahs to self professed Pariahs, we will not only expose the hypocrisy and corruption in organized religion but the absurdly hilarious logic that holds it together. – Larry Charles

————

As a comedian, religion has always interested me — it was the single easiest subject to make jokes about. I think that tells us something:  comedians look for things that don’t make sense, that are illogical.

Join me in the final battle between intelligence and stupidity that will decide the future of humanity. Coming soon to a house of false idols near you. – Bill Maher

Not everyone found the trailer funny….

Rama over at Rama’s Screen missed out on the humour:

Religulous has hit the web and Bill Maher surprisingly is not as funny as he is on his show.

Eddie couldn’t even come up with any ideas of his own to diss the film. He just copied and pasted some weird poetry that sounds pretty ancient and hardly makes sense, instead of coming up with any arguments himself.

There was a wide range of reactions, but overall most were positive. Even some humour blogs, like gorillasushi, posted the trailer. I am actually pretty surprised about how little controversy it has stirred up. I am sure people will start voicing their opinions closer to release time.

If you still haven’t seen the trailer, check it out here.

  1. Thanks for the link! I like Eddie’s comments: “I hope Christians will go to the theaters, not armed with picket signs, but with gospel tracts and a foot stool for open-air preaching.” Yeah, good luck with that, crazies. I love when people choose to represent their religion with public fanaticism and general insane behavior.

  2. I’ve seen Bill Maher’s show on HBO and I think he’s a funny guy, either that or his team of writers are genius.

It’s not old news that Bill Maher’s not fond of religion and what it does to ignorant people who are easily brainwashed by those who use religion to spread extremism and fanaticism.

If that movie stays true to making fun of those people, then I’m in.

As far as the trailer goes,… everytime I see it again and again… his remarks and comments just fail to crack me up. It leaves me saying… eh, okay.
    It’s a matter of taste, I suppose.

I’m sure when we see the whole movie, it will reveal some of the hilarious stuff that the trailer didn’t get to show.
I mean, it’s directed by the guy who helm BORAT!
I just hope we won’t have to see Bill Maher running around, wrestling with some big fat old dude :)

I’m looking forward to seeing it for sure, if it is half as good as his book “When You Ride Alone You Ride with Bin Laden” it should be great.

  4. great site… tks for your insight..
