Gaining respect for CBC; lost it for Ben Stein

I am gaining respect for the CBC

I generally only watch CBC for Hockey Night in Canada, and not much else. Most of their original programming is not very good. I actually don’t watch TV except for sports. That is besides the fact.

The CBC is releasing one of their upcoming shows, Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister, over p2p networks (ie Bittorrent). While this doesn’t make me forget that the CBC didn’t resign Christ Cuthbert, a great hockey commentator, it does restore some credibility by trying something new and progressive. Hopefully more of CBC’s content will be available for download in the future, so everyone go out and download this, even if you aren’t going to watch it. If this is a success, maybe we’ll have hockey games via Bittorrent sometime in the future.[via Michael Geist ]

I have just lost all respect of Ben Stein

I used to be a big fan of Win Ben Stein’s Money, mainly for his dry sense of humour. I recently found out that he is releasing a pro-creationist movie called “eXpelled.” Respect is now 0.

Check out the trailer here. It’s horrible. The comments are being moderated, so mine haven’t shown up. They are definitely being censored. Here are a few excerpts from the comments:

“About time someone steps up.”

“A few of us from our church saw a private screening in Houston and the movie is fantastic! Tell as many as you can to go opening weekend April 18th.”

“Way to go Ben. This has been going on for years. It is about time someone exposed it. Anyone who sees how DNA works cannot help but conclude that there is Intelligence.”

“I don’t understand why we just accept both theories and leave people to their own, each side feels compelled to preach and teach. Just end it. As for people being expelled from education because they don’t agree with it, thats wrong.”

The last comment really bothers me. Many people don’t understand that intelligent design is NOT a Theory. It is a hypothesis, not a Theory. Scientifically, a theory is something that has been tested and can be used to predict things. In colloquial speech, when people say “I have a theory,” they really mean “I have a hypothesis.”

This is exactly why we need more popularizers of science such as Richard Dawkins and Carl Sagan. A recent xkcd comic, “Unscientific” agrees with me and portrays my point…check it out.

  1. “This video is not available in your country.”

    Stupid France.

  2. Which video is that?

  3. Aiden Wiechula says:

CBC is fucked- they dont have the Grey Cup or the Briar anymore. And they cut my two favourite shows- J-Pod and MVP- the best CBC shows in ever. At least they still have Little Mosque on the Priarie.

  4. Yea CBC is going downhill…..they also don’t even have the 2010 olympics.

Did you actually watch MVP, or did the wife drag you along to it?

  5. C-Squared says:

Why do people think that Creationism and Evolution are mutually exclusive? They’re not. If God has the intelligence and power to create humans, as well as the entire universe, he’s got to be smart enough enough to give us Evolution.

It is very possible for faith and science to coexist.

  6. Well, if you take the bible literally, like most creationists do, the earth is 6000 years old.

This is not a long enough timescale for evolution to work.

  7. C-Squared says:

Well those people are just a lost cause. :P

  8. Why should you pick and choose which parts of the bible to take literally? It is totally arbitrary to do so.

Originally, all of the bible was taken as truth. Over time, as science has found flaws in the bible, less and less is taken literally.

  9. C-Squared says:

People assume that by believing in God, I believe in the Bible. I don’t. It was written by human hands and has been translated and altered by kings and queens. There’s no way I would ever follow it as “the word of God”.

    I don’t pick and choose.

  10. Where is the evidence for a god then?

I think we can both agree on Sagan’s god:

“The idea that God is an oversized white male with a flowing beard who sits in the sky and tallies the fall of every sparrow is ludicrous. But if by God one means the set of physical laws that govern the universe, then clearly there is such a God. This God is emotionally unsatisfying… it does not make much sense to pray to the law of gravity.” -Carl Sagan

I still think that Creationism and Evolution are mutually exclusive though.

  11. Aiden Wiechula says:

Actually I make Anna watch MVP cause it so awesome. I thought it was designed for young males cause of the inordinate amount of hot chicks and cleavage shots until I found the facebook group which was composed of middle-aged women… Whoops- whatever still an awesome show that I got really into.

BTW started watching The Border – your typical cliched unrealistic police drama but its a Canadian cliched unrealistic police drama which makes it 10 times better. And it has alot of contemperory references which is cool. At least that show isn’t being canceled.

  12. @weech Huh, I though Ron Maclean was just vouching for it because he was getting paid to do so.

  13. Leon says:

Why are you gonna write off Ben Stein just ’cause he made a creationist movie? It’s still a good show despite your opposing views.

  14. The trailer doesn’t work for me in France.

  15. Wow, I didn’t realize that youtube did regional filtering.

I thought that was just from the likes of Hulu.

  16. I’m writing off Ben Stein because I have no respect for creationists.

  17. TS says:

Found this pretty in depth post about regional blocking on YouTube:

I could see the CBC distributing its own content over Bit Torrent, but I don’t think we will see NHL games being passed around for free quite yet. Although it would be an interesting idea for the NHL to think about, and it would separate them from the other sports down in the states where they are so desperate for more viewership.

Actually Ben Stein is talking about people like you that are trying to ban creationist from the scientific scene, evolution is not a science and it has been proven wrong many times but people hold on to this theory because it suit their lifestyles by rejecting God or by deniying his powers. It is kind of weird that word like “Dinosaurs” and “pre-historic” only appeared in the 1800′s, the same time Darwin came up with this “theory”. Are you saying that all scientist before Darwin were complete idiots? I think you should closely look at both side before making your decisions on which “therory” or “hypothesis” is correct. Kent Hovind has very good seminars on the subject if you are willing to take the time to watch them before you decide he’s an idiot. You can get them at http://www.drdino.com.

  20. Cinzanopaws says:

Hmmm..I don’t think that he says scientists before Darwin were idiots. ..weren’t many scientists before Darwin just conveniently exterminated by the churches?

  21. Etienne says:

What about Isaac Newton, Nicolas Capernic etc were they Idiots….. the fact that the Roman Catholic church was killing everybody that were disagreeing with their doctrine and dogma has nothing to do with science or evolution. I will remind you that people being killed by the Roman Catholic church were mostly theologians and their followers who actually studied the scriptures and disagreed with Rome and started the various Protestant denomination. Rome agrees with evolution so this is the wrong argument, also note that Darwin was a student in theology not a scientist (biologist or geologist). Evolution is a religion not a science.

Just have to love comment censorship, don’t ya? Eh…, I’m not a big fan of Ben Stein either.

  24. Hello, thanks you for this useful blogg, i really find much interesting things on it and i really loved the design of the blogg. I found it on google. I also want to wish you a happy new year.
