I seem to be using more and more google products. My life has become googleized. I am generally happy with their products, which is why I use them. There is a need for one small addition.
The header on the google homepage should be customizable. My two most used google products are gmail and reader. Reader is mysteriously absent from the default header.
Am I the only one who has a problem with this?
Here is the debate between Christopher Hitchens and Rabbi Shmuley Boteach that took place on January 30, 2008. It is 90mins long; I am only half way through it but it is good so far and wished to share it. I really like listening to Hitchens speak. I think that he is the most well spoken of the four horsemen.
Here is the email follow up between the two that took place after the debate.
I would highly recommend watching this:
I think that the media should use scientific notation. First of all, scientific notation should ditch the scientific tag. This just scares people away. Instead of using a “trillion”, 1012 is much clearer and is the best method we have for visualizing large numbers. Our minds aren’t good at this anyways, so we need all the help we can get.
Which notation would you prefer?
a) one billion
b) 1000000000
c) 109
The word ‘billion’ is too interchangeable with the other illions. Writing out all of the zeros is just tedious. Scientific notation clearly identifies the size of the number.
The media tosses millions, billions and trillion around like they are equal. They are far from it. To put it in perspective, a million seconds takes 11 days; a billion takes 32 years; and a trillion takes 317 centuries. The cost of the war in Iraq has passed the trillion dollar mark. If you made $10,000/sec, you would be a millionaire within 2 minutes, but it would take you over 3 years to make a trillion dollars. There is a big difference!
Nikon has produced a great site which helps visualize very small and very big numbers. Check it out.
Does anybody know what kind of car this is? My mom just got back from a trip to the UK and snapped a picture of this smart-car-esque vehicle. I can’t make out what brand it is from the picture. And no, this picture is not distorted.
I recently came across a really neat concept for a bike: the swing bike. It has a pivot in the frame, providing another way to turn. This idea has the potential to be really fun on a mountain bike.
I searched around the internet for these, and found that they do actually exist outside the realm of homemade prototypes. Although now discontinued, they were produced for several years in the ’70s.
